Background of the Study
Electronic libraries have become indispensable in the modern educational landscape, offering students vast access to digital resources and scholarly materials. In Jos North LGA, Plateau State, the integration of electronic libraries into online education represents a significant step toward bridging resource gaps and enhancing academic research capabilities. The digital transformation of traditional libraries has enabled students to access books, journals, and multimedia content from virtually anywhere, promoting a self-directed learning environment (Eze, 2023). With rapid technological advancements, electronic libraries now provide sophisticated search functions, personalized recommendations, and instant access to current research, which can support diverse learning needs and academic interests (Nwankwo, 2024).

The adoption of electronic libraries in Jos North LGA has been driven by the need to supplement conventional teaching resources and address issues such as limited physical library space and scarce materials. By leveraging digital repositories, institutions can offer a more comprehensive and up-to-date curriculum, enhancing the quality of online education. Furthermore, electronic libraries play a crucial role in promoting independent research skills among students, allowing them to explore academic topics beyond the constraints of prescribed textbooks (Okoro, 2025). Despite these benefits, challenges persist regarding equitable access, user training, and system maintenance. Some students face difficulties in navigating digital interfaces, while others encounter connectivity issues that hinder their ability to retrieve essential information in a timely manner.

Moreover, the quality and reliability of electronic library resources depend heavily on regular updates and the integration of advanced search technologies. Educators and librarians in Jos North LGA are continually working to enhance user experience and ensure that the electronic library meets the evolving demands of online education. The overall success of electronic libraries in promoting academic success depends on addressing both technological and user-related challenges. As such, it is imperative to evaluate the extent of students’ access to these resources and determine the factors that influence their usage and effectiveness. This evaluation is critical for informing policy decisions and guiding future investments in digital educational infrastructure (Eze, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024; Okoro, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the transformative potential of electronic libraries in enhancing online education, students in Jos North LGA face several obstacles that impede optimal access and utilization of these digital resources. One of the primary issues is the inconsistency in internet connectivity and digital device availability, which hinders students’ ability to access electronic libraries when needed (Eze, 2023). Moreover, a lack of user-friendly interfaces and insufficient training on how to navigate complex digital systems further complicate the students’ experience. These challenges are compounded by infrequent updates and limited technical support, leading to frustration and underutilization of available resources (Nwankwo, 2024).

Another critical problem is the disparity in digital literacy levels among students, which results in unequal access to and benefit from electronic libraries. While some students are adept at using digital tools to search for scholarly materials, others struggle to locate and effectively use these resources, thereby widening the educational gap. Additionally, the reliance on electronic libraries as a primary source of academic material has raised concerns about the quality and credibility of the information provided, as not all digital content undergoes rigorous academic scrutiny (Okoro, 2025). These issues underscore the need for a systematic evaluation of the factors that limit student access to electronic libraries in Jos North LGA. Without addressing these barriers, the full potential of electronic libraries to enhance online education may not be realized, ultimately affecting students’ academic performance and research competencies.

Objectives of the Study

  • To assess the level of access students have to electronic libraries for online education.

  • To identify challenges affecting the effective use of electronic libraries.

  • To recommend strategies to improve access and utilization of electronic libraries in the region.

Research Questions

  • What is the current level of student access to electronic libraries in Jos North LGA?

  • What technological and user-related challenges impede effective use of electronic libraries?

  • How can institutions enhance the functionality and accessibility of electronic libraries?

Research Hypotheses

  • H₁: Increased access to electronic libraries positively impacts students’ academic performance.

  • H₂: Poor digital literacy significantly reduces effective use of electronic libraries.

  • H₃: Enhanced technical support improves the overall utilization of electronic libraries.

Significance of the Study
This study is pivotal in highlighting the role of electronic libraries in supporting online education in Jos North LGA. By evaluating access levels and identifying challenges, the research offers recommendations to optimize digital resource delivery and enhance student learning. The findings will assist educational stakeholders in making informed decisions to invest in and improve electronic library services, thereby advancing academic research and student performance (Eze, 2023; Nwankwo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is confined to evaluating students’ access to electronic libraries for online education within Jos North LGA. It focuses on technological infrastructure, digital literacy, and resource management while excluding offline library resources. Variations in individual user experiences and external factors may limit the generalizability of the findings.
